Is This Year The Last Year Of The iPod Classic

Is this the last year of the iPod Classic? The iPod Classic is the only iPod in Apples line up that still has a hard drive and physical controls, all of Apple’s newer devices contain flash memory and a touchscreen. The iPod Classic, which hasn’t had a change of design since original iPod design in 2001 remains to be on sale at Apple Store to this day.
According to Wired the iPod Classic is on its way out. A bunch of commentators who all agree that this will be the year that Apple retires the elderly design. Perhaps they are right, but a certain rumor-phobe website called the discontinuation of the iPod Classic in 2011:
Specifically, if you want to buy an iPod shuffle or iPod classic from Apple, you should do it sooner rather than later. We’ve heard those two iPods are getting the axe this year .
Rumours of a 128GB iPhone and iPod Touch being announced could spell the end of the iPod Classic. Announced in 2001, iPod sales were sky rocketing up until they peaked in December 2008. Since then, they have been slowly dropping as many potential users go for the iPhone or other smartphones instead of a dedicated MP3 player. The numbers have gotten dismal enough that in its second-quarter financial results this year, Apple for the first time left iPod numbers out of the announcement entirely.
This is not to say that no one is buying or using iPods. The iPod shuffle still is used by runners and outdoor enthusiasts wanting something that is more portable than an iPhone for listening to tunes while they sweat. The iPod touch still has a place. in the line up. It’s cheaper than an iPhone since no data plan is required and it has full access to the App Store, making it appeal to customers on a budget. The iPod Classic and iTunes transformed the world of music, setting the stage for the iPhone and the mobile revolution. But when the iPhone takes the stage on Tuesday, we may see the iPod Classic quietly disappear for good.
Will Apple finally retire it? Maybe, we’re going to just have to wait and see.Patrick Mifsud is
